Hemp Oil vs CBD Oil: What You Need To Know About Our CBD Products
CBD: you’ve heard of it, you’re familiar with it, and chances are (since you’re here on the Cornerstone blog), you have experience trying different CBD products. Since the 2018 farm bill passed, industrial hemp-derived cannabidiol has absolutely exploded in popularity. And though our Colorado-based organic CBD company is hardly new to the market, we understand that there are many folks coming to us for credible CBD-related information.
In the past few years, the CBD vs hemp debacle has received more and more attention, prompting CBD users and curious consumers alike to ask this question: what’s the difference between hemp (hempseed oil) and CBD oil?
About Hemp (Hempseed) Oil and CBD Oil
While both of these Cannabis Sativa-derived compounds are not considered psychoactive (and thus, won’t get you high, unlike traditional marijuana), there are notable differences between the two that we’d like to touch on in today’s blog post.
To learn more, continue reading below, or feel free to contact the team at Cornerstone Botanicals with any questions about CBD, hemp (hempseed) oil, or any of the USDA organic CBD products we offer online. Our goal is to help inform people about the value of CBD oil and products that may be beneficial to their health and wellness.
Let’s get started!
What Is CBD Oil?
To be completely clear, and as we’re sure you’re aware, CBD oil is what we sell. CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of over a hundred active compounds found in the hemp plant. These compounds can be extracted from leaves, flowers, and even the stalks of hemp.
Unlike its cousin, hemp oil, it’s not derived from…well, hemp seeds. More on that below.
What Is Hemp (Hempseed) Oil?
As the name implies, hemp (hempseed) oil is derived purely from the seeds of hemp plants — not the stalk, flower (bud), or leaves of the plant. Hemp oil can actually be likened to a number of different carrier oils including sunflower seed oil and jojoba oil. This is due to the fact that hemp oil is extracted via a cold-press method. Carrier oils are largely used to dilute essential oils and other more potent, concentrated oils, allowing them to be evenly applied.
You can think of hemp oil as more of a superfood designed to add considerable nutritional value to the foods that you eat. Hemp oil products are also very effective as topical skincare solutions, working as a moisturizer and skin softener. When you look at a skincare product label, look out for the following names that all (essentially) refer to the same thing:
- Hemp seed oil
- Cannabis sativa seed oil
- Virgin hemp oil
- Hemp oil
Hemp oil works wonderfully as a seed-based oil that’s very rich in antioxidants and omega-3 and -6 fatty acids. However, hemp oil does not contain any CBD whatsoever. For that matter, hemp oil products do not contain any cannabinoids. This is a crucial distinction, prompting our next point.
So, What’s The Difference?
Hemp oil, i.e. hempseed oil, is derived from the cannabis sativa plant — just like CBD. However, the main difference between hemp oil and CBD oil is in their relative cannabinoid content (or lack thereof). To reiterate our point above, genuine CBD products contain cannabinoids including, obviously, CBD. Hemp oil products, on the other hand, contain absolutely zero CBD or other cannabinoids.
In short, these derivatives of the cannabis plant may be distantly related, but their chemical makeup, origins, and value as a wellness product are vastly different.
Seeking Out The Benefits Of CBD? Don’t Use Hemp Oil Products!
While there is certainly nothing wrong with using hemp oil products for your hair, skin, or diet, you should not ingest hemp oil and expect to obtain the same benefits that CBD oil offers. The marketing mix-up between these two parts of the cannabis plant has, unfortunately, mislead many consumers to believe that cheaper hemp oil products will benefit them in the same way that true CBD products would.
Pure, potent, and organically derived CBD products are not necessarily cheap, and if what you see seems too good to be true in terms of its price, then it probably is — and it’s probably a hemp oil product.
Remember: Not All CBD Products Are Created Equally
The same goes for hemp oil products, but in a market that’s becoming more and more saturated with competition and even more competitive prices, it’s important to be a critical, savvy consumer and research exactly what it is that you’re putting into your body. Though these wellness products likely won’t harm you in any way, you don’t want to waste your hard-earned money on something that’s not what you thought it was.
