What is CBD?
See our glossary of terms to know for more information.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a type of cannabinoid, an active biological compound that exists naturally within the human body and all other mammals. Recently, it was discovered that this same compound is also naturally present in hemp and cannabis plants. While there are nearly 100 different cannabinoids found in the hemp plant, CBD is among the most abundant. The discovery of CBD in hemp extract has led to it becoming one of the most promising natural health supplements in the world today. Best of all, it is non-psychoactive, meaning you won’t ever feel “high” from it as is notoriously known of its cannabis counterpart.
Scientists first discovered CBD (and THC) in the 1930s, and to this day are still learning exactly how these plant-based cannabinoids work in the human body. After decades of prohibition, there is now a plethora of promising clinical research being conducted on cannabinoids, including CBD, but so far, here is what we’ve gathered about how CBD works.
Centuries ago, when people were in need of medical treatment for various ailments, they utilized oils and chemicals from the plants around them — one of the most abundant being hemp. This was how medicinal practice was performed for the majority of history; that is, until technology gave us the ability to mass-produce synthetic medications. While at the time it seemed like an ingenious way to handle the world’s health issues, these pharmaceutical creations would soon lead to other issues including countless side effects, addictions, and overdoses.
At Cornerstone Botanicals, we think returning to nature’s roots is the hope for the future. That’s why we started our CBD shop here in Colorado, providing a wide variety of CBD oil products to people who feel the same way about health and wellness. While the chemical CBD is often associated with marijuana, it can not and will not induce a “high.” That’s caused by THC found in marijuana, a completely different chemical. You can take CBD oil from our CBD shop or any reputable CBD company without this concern.

Hemp And The Body
CB receptors, their functions, and you.
When the endocannabinoid system (ECS) was discovered in our biology, so were cannabinoids — compounds that the body produces naturally for maintaining physical and mental health. One of the primary cannabinoids found just happened to be CBD — a major component also found in abundance within the hemp plant. The endocannabinoid system functions via two primary types of cannabinoid receptors found throughout cells in the body: CB1 and CB2.

CoA (Certificate of Analysis)
A certificate of analysis (CoA) is a lab report on the chemical make-up (i.e. contents) of a product. In the context of Industrial Hemp derived products, the CoA shows the contents of the cannabinoids & other tested compounds such as heavy metals, etc. CoA’s are used to verify that the contents of the product are matched to the advertised or marketed product. These reports are important for verifying that hemp extracts have less than 0.3% THC, as determined by the definition of Industrial Hemp in the law. At Cornerstone Botanicals, the CBD used in all our products is tested by independent 3rd party labs. You may request a copy of a CoA if you would like to review the lab test results for a specific product.
