Learning Center

There’s enough information circling around the internet concerning CBD that it could fill a million blogs and news articles — and it certainly does! Since the industry of CBD has accumulated such a high amount of interest and become a frequent topic of discussion today, it can become very difficult to decipher what is fact from what is fiction.

That’s why we created our Learning Center here at our CBD shop, Cornerstone Botanicals — to clarify the facts from the fiction and to be your source for clear, simple, and scientifically based information. Think of this as a “CBD 101” online course that you can come visit anytime and share with others who may have questions about CBD. Now, let’s dive into the wonderful world of CBD!

Why Hemp?

Hemp is a staple crop across the entire planet that has been cultivated by farmers for a variety of uses for over a millennium. Hemp is a remarkably versatile plant, capable of growing in almost any climate and being implemented into the production of food, clothing, oils, medicines — anything you put your mind to.

People have been using and consuming hemp-based materials and products for all of history — that is, until a few decades back, when it was outlawed as part of the laws developed during the cannabis prohibition due to its association with the plant. The good news is, thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp is back and poised to play a more vital role in the world today than ever before!

Hemp Extracted CBD vs. Cannabis Extracted CBD

Hemp and cannabis may originate from the same species of plant, but there are a few prominent components that make them incredibly different from one another. What makes hemp unique from its psychoactive cousin, cannabis, is that hemp is cultivated to have high concentrations of cannabidiol (CBD) and minimal to no THC content (less than 0.3 percent), the chemical abundantly found in cannabis that contributes to its ‘high’ sensations.

Compared to CBD extracted from cannabis, hemp extract serves an excellent source of full-spectrum cannabinoids in their original, balanced state: with high CBD and low THC. It is also legal to purchase CBD products derived from hemp extract nationwide — unlike cannabis, which is only legal in the respective states that have fully legalized marijuana.

What is CBD?

See our glossary of terms to know for more information.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a type of cannabinoid, an active biological compound that exists naturally within the human body and all other mammals. Recently, it was discovered that this same compound is also naturally present in hemp and cannabis plants. While there are nearly 100 different cannabinoids found in the hemp plant, CBD is among the most abundant. The discovery of CBD in hemp extract has led to it becoming one of the most promising natural health supplements in the world today. Best of all, it is non-psychoactive, meaning you won’t ever feel “high” from it as is notoriously known of its cannabis counterpart.

Scientists first discovered CBD (and THC) in the 1930s, and to this day are still learning exactly how these plant-based cannabinoids work in the human body. After decades of prohibition, there is now a plethora of promising clinical research being conducted on cannabinoids, including CBD, but so far, here is what we’ve gathered about how CBD works.

Centuries ago, when people were in need of medical treatment for various ailments, they utilized oils and chemicals from the plants around them — one of the most abundant being hemp. This was how medicinal practice was performed for the majority of history; that is, until technology gave us the ability to mass-produce synthetic medications. While at the time it seemed like an ingenious way to handle the world’s health issues, these pharmaceutical creations would soon lead to other issues including countless side effects, addictions, and overdoses.

At Cornerstone Botanicals, we think returning to nature’s roots is the hope for the future. That’s why we started our CBD shop here in Colorado, providing a wide variety of CBD oil products to people who feel the same way about health and wellness. While the chemical CBD is often associated with marijuana, it can not and will not induce a “high.” That’s caused by THC found in marijuana, a complete different chemical. So you can take CBD oil from our CBD shop or any reputable CBD company without this concern.

Hemp And The Body

CB receptors, their functions, and you.

When the endocannabinoid system (ECS) was discovered in our biology, so were cannabinoids — compounds that the body produces naturally for maintaining physical and mental health. One of the primary cannabinoids found just happened to be CBD — a major component also found in abundance within the hemp plant. The endocannabinoid system functions via two primary types of cannabinoid receptors found throughout cells in the body: CB1 and CB2.

Benefits of CBD

The list of potential benefits that you can experience from adding CBD products into your daily routine is constantly growing, but the following are the most commonly known benefits that have been researched as well as claimed by customers who have ordered our CBD products:

Anxiety and Depression

An extensive body of research has indicated that CBD extract can be a highly effective mood stabilizer, making it a viable option for helping with a wide variety of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and even addiction.

Pain Relief

Whether you suffer from forms of chronic pain, have suffered from an injury, or simply experience soreness after a hard day’s work or play, CBD for pain can help. CBD functions as a natural analgesic, cutting down inflammation and relieving pain symptoms. Researchers theorize that the oil chemically interacts with the receptors in both your immune system and brain to help reduce pain and inflammation.

Epilepsy

When a seizure occurs, it’s because of an overload of electricity in the brain. Research has shown that CBD has a direct impact on regulating this electroactivity, allowing it to significantly reduce the number of chronic seizures one experiences from epilepsy. One brand of CBD has already been approved by the FDA to be prescribed for specific epileptic conditions.

Cancer/Chemotherapy

CBD is currently being examined for its plausible antitumoral effects, which could aid in the fight against many forms of cancer. It has already been implemented by many medical professionals as a method for coping with the harsh side effects from chemotherapy and other cancer treatments.

Skin Conditions

CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties also make it capable of providing natural skin nourishment, making it a practical, all-in-one skincare solution for acne treatment, moisturizing, irritation relief, and much more. Learn more about CBD skin care benefits.

Neurodegenerative Disorders

Studies have found that a receptor in the brain, CB1, might be the culprit behind the fading memory side effect consistent with Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson’s, and other neurodegenerative disorders. This means that CBD oil could very well be the solution, because when CBD interacts with these CB1 receptors, it puts them back into balance, meaning it can help manage the symptoms of these diseases.

While CBD products can be of great help to many, they have still not yet been proven to be a cure for any medical ailments. We strongly recommend discussing taking CBD with your doctor prior to placing an order for any CBD product if you suffer from any of these ailments or other serious health concerns.
